In recent years, more women have been stepping into the world of shooting sports, challenging old stereotypes and adding new energy to the industry. The shift towards inclusivity is not just a trend; it’s an important step forward for the sport as a whole. At Rightgun, we believe that encouraging more women to get involved in shooting sports isn’t just beneficial for their personal growth—it’s essential for the sport’s long-term success.

Breaking stereotypes: Women in shooting

“Shooting taught me discipline and gave me confidence. It’s not about gender; it’s about skill and passion.” – Kim Rhode, Olympic Medalist in Shooting

In England, approximately 80,000 individuals participated in shooting sports in 2023.  However, women remain underrepresented in this field. Between April 2023 and March 2024, only 6% of the 510,717 shotgun and firearm certificate holders in England and Wales were female.

Efforts are underway to address this gender disparity. The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) has initiated programs aimed at encouraging more women to engage in shooting sports. These initiatives include women-only events and educational outreach to foster inclusivity and support for women entering the shooting community.

Despite these efforts, the overall participation rates in shooting sports remain low compared to other physical activities. For instance, walking for leisure and fitness activities are more popular among women in England.  Addressing the barriers that women face in accessing shooting sports is crucial for achieving greater gender balance in this area.

Historically, shooting has been viewed as a male-dominated activity. However, the growing number of women getting involved in shooting, from clay pigeon to target shooting, is rapidly changing that perception. Women now make up a significant portion of shooting sports participants, from beginners to seasoned professionals. This cultural shift is crucial for dismantling outdated stereotypes and creating a more inclusive environment in shooting sports.

Women bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and a unique approach to the sport, contributing to its diversity and growth. Whether it’s through shooting clubs, competitive leagues, or recreational shooting, women are showing that shooting is for everyone—regardless of gender.

The importance of female participation in shooting sports

    1. Promotes equality and diversity

The inclusion of women in shooting sports helps promote gender equality. By encouraging female participation, the sport becomes more accessible and welcoming to all. Greater gender diversity not only enriches the community but also expands the talent pool, resulting in a broader range of competitors and enthusiasts.

    2. Increases innovation and development

As women continue to enter the shooting world, new ideas and innovations are emerging. Whether it’s advancements in equipment, shooting techniques, or safety practices, the input from women contributes to making the sport more enjoyable and accessible for everyone. A diverse group of participants often leads to new developments that push the sport forward.

    3. Fostering a stronger community

Shooting sports are about more than just competition; they’re about building community. Women bring a collaborative and supportive atmosphere to shooting clubs, creating a more inclusive and encouraging environment. This sense of camaraderie is key to the sport’s growth and longevity, as newcomers feel more comfortable and motivated to participate.

    4. Health and empowerment

Shooting sports offer numerous physical and mental benefits, and women can benefit just as much as men. The sport requires focus, discipline, and physical strength, which empowers women to develop skills they may not have realized they had. Moreover, shooting can be a great stress reliever and a way to build confidence, providing both physical and emotional rewards.

    5. The growth of competitive women’s sports

The success of athletes like Amber Hill, a British Skeet Shooter and Olympic medalist, showcases the incredible talent women bring to shooting sports. Her achievements have not only elevated the visibility of women in shooting but also motivated countless young girls to pick up the sport.

The rise of women’s shooting competitions, including events like the Women’s World Cup and other major tournaments, is a testament to the increasing role of women in the sport. These competitions not only highlight female talent but also inspire young women to pursue shooting as a potential career or hobby. The more women participate in competitive shooting, the more opportunities there are to elevate their visibility and performance on a global scale.
