Gun shops in the South East: A guide to dealers across Kent, Sussex, Surrey and the Home Counties

The South East is not the first region most people picture when they think of British shooting. It has more motorway than moorland and more commuters than keepers. Yet it is home to some of the country’s most established gun trade, a dense network of clay grounds, and a surprising amount of genuinely good rough and driven shooting tucked between the towns.

It is also a region where shoppers are unusually well served, and unusually spoilt for choice. This guide covers what the South East gun trade looks like, how to pick a dealer worth building a relationship with, and how to see what is available across the region without spending your weekends driving the M25.

What shooting in the South East actually looks like

Start with the ground. Kent and Sussex carry a strong game shooting tradition, with the Weald and the Downs supporting driven days, walked-up shooting and a good deal of pigeon and vermin work on the arable in between. Hampshire's chalk downland and surrounding countryside also support a well-developed game-shooting trade.

Surrey, Berkshire and the closer Home Counties are more suburban, and the shooting reflects that: a heavier emphasis on clay grounds, air rifle and rimfire pest control, and shooters who travel out at weekends rather than shooting off the doorstep. The coastline adds another strand: Kent and Sussex both have wildfowling traditions, which means heavy loads, camouflage and semi-automatics in the mix.

The upshot is a regional trade that has to serve several very different customers, and dealers here tend to specialise more sharply than in more uniformly rural regions. Knowing which shop does what saves a great deal of time.

Established South East names in the directory

Several long-standing dealers serving the South East appear in the Rightgun.uk business directory, and search data suggests plenty of people look them up by name rather than by product, a good sign that they have earned local loyalty.

Saxon Arms of Kent is an established South East dealer, serving shooters in Maidstone and the surrounding area. Beyond the county gun shops, the wider South East and Home Counties are also home to established names such as E. J. Churchill and Holland & Holland, with shooting grounds, gunmaking and fitting services that attract customers from across the region and beyond.

The practical approach is the same everywhere: rather than looking for one shop that does everything, know two or three. One for browsing stock and part-exchange, one you trust with servicing and gunsmithing, and one that genuinely specialises in whatever you shoot most.

Choosing a dealer worth returning to

Stock breadth is the obvious criterion and rarely the most important one. What separates a good gun shop from an adequate one is whether they will give you time, checking fit, letting you mount several guns properly, and telling you honestly when the gun you have set your heart on is the wrong choice for your build or your shooting.

Servicing capability is the second thing to check, and the one people regret ignoring. A shop with a workshop on site, or a solid relationship with one, is worth a great deal over the years. Ask what they do in house: barrel and choke work, stock alterations, trigger work, air rifle servicing.

Third, ask about part-exchange. Dealers willing to take guns in part-exchange are useful as your shooting changes, and their appetite for it is a reasonable proxy for how confident they are in the used market.

Finally, match the dealer to the purchase. A shop that lives and breathes clay guns is not automatically the best place to buy a stalking rifle, a thermal setup or a wildfowling semi-auto, and the good ones will tell you so themselves.

Clay grounds, fitting and trying before you buy

The South East’s density of clay grounds is one of its real advantages. If you are buying a first shotgun, or moving between disciplines, the ability to try several guns before committing is worth more than any specification sheet.

Several dealers in the region are attached to or work closely with shooting grounds, which makes a proper fitting session realistic rather than aspirational. Even an hour spent mounting guns of different stock dimensions will teach you more about what suits you than a month of reading reviews. Length of pull, drop, and cast are not details; they are the difference between a gun that shoots where you look and one that fights you.

For rifle buyers, the equivalent is range time. Ranges are thinner on the ground in the South East than in the uplands, but club membership opens up far more than the occasional visit, and clubs are also where you hear which dealers people actually rate.

Buying locally versus buying nationally

The case for buying local is straightforward: you can handle the gun, get it fitted, and take any problem back to a person rather than a call centre. That matters most for a first shotgun, or one you intend to keep for decades.

The counter-argument is choice. No single shop, however good, holds every model in every configuration. If you want a specific barrel length, choke arrangement, stock dimension or calibre, restricting yourself to shops within an hour’s drive narrows the field sharply, and in the South East, an hour’s drive can be a very short distance indeed.

Most buyers end up doing both. They search nationally to work out what exists at what specification and what it is realistically being asked for, then deal locally to complete the purchase properly. Listings in the South East reflect activity across a densely populated region, so it is worth checking regularly rather than once.

What sells well in the region

Clay guns dominate, unsurprisingly. Over-and-unders from the established Italian and Japanese makers move steadily, and there is a healthy second-hand market in them because South East shooters trade up more often than most.

Game guns hold their own, particularly in Kent, Sussex and the Hampshire fringe, and English side-by-sides retain a following that has if anything strengthened as more people discover how well made older guns can be. At the other end, air rifles and rimfires are strong throughout, for a great many South East shooters, pest control on smallholdings and permissions is the shooting they actually do week to week.

Optics and thermal equipment have grown steadily across the region as night-time vermin control has become more common, and that shows in what people search for as much as what they buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a registered firearms dealer near me in the South East? Start with the Rightgun.uk business directory, which lists dealers by name, then narrow by what you actually need: stock, servicing or fitting. Local clubs and clay grounds are the best second source, because reputations in shooting travel by word of mouth.

Are gun shops in the South East more expensive? Not systematically. Prices track the model, condition and demand far more than the postcode. What the region does offer is competition and density, which generally works in a buyer’s favour if you are prepared to compare.

Can I buy from a dealer in another region? Yes, and many people do, particularly for specific models or configurations. Browsing national listings first tells you what exists and where, and you can then decide whether the specification is worth the journey.

Which South East dealer should I start with? Whichever one specialises in your discipline. A clay shooter and a stalker should not be walking into the same shop first.
