Design and build quality
Pick a Blade up and the first impression is of a torch that has been machined rather than manufactured. The single-piece aluminium body has no joints to work loose or let in moisture, and the anodised finish has proven durable through a couple of seasons of Welsh hedgerows and wet Land Rover footwells in our own use. Nothing rattles. Nothing flexes.
The body is machined with 25mm and 30mm diameter sections, which is a small detail that makes a big practical difference. Real-world performance: What it does in the field
The headline performance figures come from Dark Engine's own testing, but they were published openly with video evidence and have since been borne out by independent owners. Using the *worst-case* setup, a Pard NV007V add-on behind a day scope, which restricts light reaching the digital sensor, the Blade will illuminate tree lines at 900+ yards at 10x system magnification and deliver a clear, identifiable image of targets at 600+ yards at 32x magnification. In follow-up testing posted to the launch thread, the Blade was shown beating dusk light levels at a tree line lasered at 1,035 yards, with visible illumination on a second tree line at 1,750 yards. Numbers like that need context: nobody is shooting foxes at 900 yards, and nor should they be. What the enormous headroom means in practice is that at *realistic* engagement distances 100 to 350 yards, the Blade is loafing. You get a bright, clean, low-noise image at a fraction of the torch's maximum output, which in turn means longer battery life, less chance of washing out the picture, and a torch that will still perform when conditions are filthy: mist, drizzle and dew-laden air all soak up infrared, and output headroom is what keeps the image usable on the bad nights.

850nm or 940nm Covert: Which should you buy?
The Blade comes in two wavelengths, and choosing between them is the main decision you will face at checkout.
The standard 850nm version (£149) is the one Dark Engine recommends for most users, and we agree. 850nm diodes are more efficient, so you get maximum range and the brightest image for your money. The trade-off is a faint red glow visible at the emitter itself when the torch is running, quarry looking directly at you may see a dim red point. In practice, at sensible foxing distances and with the beam set correctly, this bothers foxes far less than lamp-shy folklore suggests, and one Night Vision Store customer specifically praised the Blade's small lens for showing "less red glare for foxes to see."
The 940nm 'Blade Covert' (£159) is effectively invisible, no glow at the emitter at all. The physics tax is that digital sensors are less sensitive at 940nm, so you give up a meaningful slice of range and image brightness compared with the 850nm unit. Our verdict
We do not say this lightly: the Dark Engine Blade is the best IR illuminator we have used, and it is the one on our own rifles every time we go out. Plenty of illuminators will put infrared light downrange. What sets the Blade apart is that it does everything well *simultaneously*, full power in the smallest, lightest package available; a genuinely precise beam with no artefacts; silent, infinitely variable control; and mounting so simple it takes five minutes with a spare scope ring. Add UK manufacture, a designer who answers questions personally on the forums, and a lifetime warranty, and the £149 asking price starts to look like the bargain the second-hand market says it is.
If you run digital night vision, an Alpex, a Pard, anything that drinks infrared, and you are still feeding it with the torch that came in the box or a £40 import, the Blade is the single most cost-effective upgrade you can make to your entire night shooting setup. Buy the 850nm unless your ground demands total invisibility, fit a decent 18650, and prepare to be slightly annoyed at how much performance you were leaving on the table.
